Start with official bio:
REAL NAME: Penelope Pincer
OCCUPATION: Scientist/Archaeologist/Adventurer
LEGAL STATUS: U.S. Citizen with no criminal record
IDENTITY: Public
KNOWN ALIASES: Penny Pincher
PLACE OF BIRTH: Unknown
MARITAL STATUS: Single
KNOWN RELATIVES: Rose (aunt), Monique (cousin)
GROUP AFFILIATION: None
BASE OF OPERATIONS: Atlanta, Georgia
FIRST APPEARANCE: Gold Digger miniseries #1
Much of Penny Pincer’s early history is unknown. She is extremely intelligent and capable, having become the nation’s youngest heart surgeon in her twenties, and is better at chemistry than even Gina Diggers (see Gina Diggers), though not as good at nuclear physics or xeno-linguistics. She is extremely well-off, but how much of her initial wealth was earned versus inherited is uncertain.
Among other pursuits, Penny worked her way up in the world of adventuring and archaeology, eventually becoming Gina’s arch-rival. The two of them began a running feud whenever they happened to go after the same site (which was rather often), spoiling each other’s plans and often as not making away with whatever the main treasure was.
For all their intellect, their rivalry often bordered on the childish, including the name-twisting insults "Gold Digger" and "Penny Pincher." At some point, this situation gave rise (so to speak) to the "Wedgie War," an odd form of psychological warfare in which each looked for the first opportunity at a given site to sneak up on her opponent and give a sharp tug on the back of her underwear.
Not quite having Gina’s level of scruples, Penny readily resorted to stronger, less savory means of gaining the upper hand on her rival. These included employing local armed mercenaries, lying to and arming paranoid Leprechauns (see Leprechauns), "forgetting" to give Gina adequate advance notice of the departure time of their flight to claim a reward, or simply getting the drop on Gina and forcing her to act as a distraction to the bad guy while Penny grabbed the treasure. Penny’s experience soon showed that when angry, Gina lost about 80% of her rational thinking ability, so she pushed Gina’s buttons as much as she could to take advantage.
Despite several occasions in which it was apparent that she and Gina worked better with each other than against, Penny remained stubborn in her rivalry. She finally offered to put an end to the feud when Gina went broke as a partial result of a bad-luck curse, though Penny still arranged to get in the "last lick."
During her first forced cooperative venture with Gina, Penny met Gina’s friend and transport agent, Kevin "Ace" Koss. She quickly developed a territorial affection for him, though Ace initially didn’t think one dinner amounted to a relationship. However, he eventually began returning her affections. Their relationship has since grown much stronger, though Ace’s long-standing "playboy flyboy" attitudes have occasionally created problems. Penny is eager to tie the knot with her beau, but realizes that despite his now-established fidelity, he isn’t quite prepared to make that level of commitment. Even her birthday present of a tachyon propulsion engine offering five times the thrust at half the weight didn’t quite get a proposal out of him. She’s willing to be patient, however, and he knows she’s about the best thing that could ever happen to him, so chances are getting better for it.
Soon after officially becoming friends, Penny and Gina encountered the time-traveling canine genius Dr. Peachbody and stopped him from killing the inventor of the dog whistle in 1784, thus foiling his plans to ensure a future where dogs ruled over men. In an attempt to stop them, Peachbody detonated a number of gene-accelerator micro-bombs, which instantly generated a group of gene-clone bioweapons based on monsters out of human mythology. After he’d been defeated, one of the bioweapons, a harpy, was freed from his control but left a mental infant. Penny decided to take the harpy, whom she named Charlotte (see Charlotte), back to the present with her so she could adopt and train it to be her bodyguard, much like Gina’s were-cheetah sister Britanny (see Cheetah) was for Gina.
Penny’s relationship with Charlotte has done much to soften her personality. Charlotte’s naivete and initial timidity toward a world that was full of new, strange (and thus scary) things have proven trying for Penny, considering she wanted a tough bodyguard. Conversely, Charlotte’s sincerity, loyalty and vigilance have given Penny something she may only rarely have had before: a true friend. Working with Charlotte has been a curious combination of training a bodyguard, raising a child and maintaining a friendship, and it has caused Penny to tap wellsprings of patience, generosity and caring that she may not have known she had. In particular, Charlotte has helped make Penny aware that looking out for Number One can appear "mean", even to people whom Penny wouldn’t think deserve that kind of treatment.
Penny is responsible for the discovery of Civ-Alpha, a primary relic site of the ancient, hyper-intelligent reptiles known as Saurians (see Saurians), and the Saurians’ dual-phase technology, which she dubbed Beta-Tech. This also meant she was responsible for the encroachment on Earth’s phase of reality by the Beta-Phantoms (see Beta-Phantoms), the shadowy denizens of the side-reality she calls the Beta Phase.
As noted, Penny is at least Gina Diggers’s equal in raw intelligence, though some of her areas of specialty are different. A curious point of variation is that while Gina has favored explosive, gun-type weaponry or gimmicks for her explorations, Penny has preferred the tension and release of bows and arrows. For a while, she carried a miniature crossbow and various specialty arrows, including a small set of arrows coated with silver. This was a precaution born from an incident in which Britanny Diggers was briefly placed under a villain’s control, but Penny has since abandoned these particular weapons. Following her discovery and analysis of Beta-Technology, Penny followed up on her predilection by developing the Beta-Archery, a pair of Beta-Engine-powered crossbows that can be positioned, targeted and fired independently or in tandem at her command. Penny’s not unfamiliar with other weaponry, however. She can operate a Hughes AWG-9 radar unit, an F-14 Tomcat’s weapons suite, and TARPS (Tactical Airborne Reconnaissance Pod System) with IR scan and optical camer–-as she scratch-built all of these for a high school science project.
Penny’s looks and social activity among the explorers’ community have earned her at least one spot as Archaeology Weekly’s pin-up girl of the month. Gina was jealous of this, but has since become the Explorers’ Society’s Explorer of the Year (see Explorers’ Society), so it’s all balanced out now.

I sometimes wonder how well she could fight if taught.
I notice that Penny, and Gina never bothered to learn while even Dr. Diggers appears to know how to throw down when needed.
Maybe - Savate,.. or something that supports redirection or lower body strength.

There was an issue where Gina opines about the fact that Penny has a number of "Labs" around the world for different reasons.
I would love to see some of these labs and the research she does at each one.

I like the way Penny has come along as a character. I never really disliked her in earlier series--she was just Gina's rival, and from what we saw of their rivalry, Gina was far from angelic herself. It could have been really easy to turn her into some sort of cookie-cutter rival, or make her an evil version of Gina, a Belloq to Gina's Indy.
Instead, Penny has gone from Gina's biggest rival to arguably her best friend. Whenever Gina needs help, Penny is there, and vice-versa. While it was fun to watch them snipe at each other, it's more fun to watch them pal around.
Another place (and someone already mentioned this in another thread) where it's been interesting to watch Penny mature is in her relationship with Ace and in her relationship with Charlotte. With Ace, Penny saw him as basically her toy-boy, as her "possession." It wasn't until she damn near lost Ace to Skippy that Penny realized that Ace is a living, breathing human being and not just a booty call to occasionally tease with the offer of marriage. With Charlie, Penny has basically become a mother figure, and she's a pretty good one from what we've seen.
Penny's a super-genius, but I'm actually kind of glad that she doesn't know how to fight. She needs to have some weaknesses, after all, and if she learns how to fight (without the use of her tech crossbows), it would render Charlotte pretty much superfluous. Also, it was more fun watching Penny make it up as she went along when she decided to pound Madrid into the floor. Yeah, she may not be much of a fighter, but she's a doctor--and doctors know exactly how and where to make an opponent suffer.

I agree... I really like what penny has become these days.. back in th' day i used to call her "The Anti-Gina".. nowadays she's became a character i can say is respectable but can have a mean moment if you cross her. She's a mother figure to Charlie and someone Gina can trust in a pinch... although i do miss their wedgie war they had going.
anyway... penny has become a character that can hold her own and deserve all the props due to her..... Now if only Ace would pop the question.^^

I'm waiting to see Penny's first reaction to Boys having an interest in Charlotte.
What kind of "mom" will she be,.. and why isn't she sporting grey hair at the thought? Charlie is so,...... (Looking for a word that encompasses mouthwatering with completly put herself in the lions mouth trustingly) that I can just imagine the mayhem.

I don't know if it will ever happen,.. (Marriage to Ace) But it would be the next step for her as a character. her trasition from "Me to Me an' Charlie, to WE" is why I love the character enough to start a thread,.. Fred has given her a very rich backstory and serious history to pull from.
The Story idea's are incredible.

As I recall, they answer that "Manuever 366" question later in that volume. It's Penny's favorite...though for other uses rather than a hard turn and dive.
Ace, you pimp!

That "FIRST" Birds and Bee's Lecture Didn't go so well for Penny.
She made the mistake of telling Charlie about Storks and whatnot,... I hope Fred lets us see the second after Penny beats some poor boy into bad health for trying to maul her "baby".

Yeah, that was it. I was having to go off of memory. 366 is probably the manuever Ace used to get out of Skippy's bedroom, i.e. "EJECT EJECT EJECT!"
I realize this may be heresy, but I think JL actually draws Penny prettier than Fred does.

(smirk)
"Credit where credit is due" JL seemed to capture Penny in "Mom mode" exactly how I imagined her off screen - Massive amounts of "patience" for her child - with lots of psychology thrown into the mix to get charlie to behave.

On Kevin:
I may be wrong - but Fred wrote Kevin as being in a bittersweet situation in ref to "Skippy" On the one hand he definitly would have no problem *ahem* trying different manuevers with her,... on the other hand she's bent/twisted enough that she is easy to resist.
............. And this is not factoring in his current relationship with Penny, or his "Flyboy chickmagnet" issues.
Sigh - it sucks to be him,... women all over him,...most of them brilliant in their chosen fields/occupations, All of them somewhere on the male fantasy list physically.
Poor guy.
